ORIGINAL, AUTHENTIC ART
My father was also an artist and is my biggest inspiration.
- Dex Kusuma

THE YELLOW BRICK ROAD GALLERY ARTIST

Up Close and Personal
We spoke with the artist about their art and their journey to creating beautiful work.

Dex Kusuma

Born in 1978, Dex hails from an artistic family. His father was a seasoned painter and sculptor and a big inspiration to Dex as he was growing up. Watching his father translate ideas into paintings was something that Dex found fascinating, so much so, that he instantly knew this was his path.

Pursuing this love of art manifested itself in not only Dex spending every moment he could with a brush in his hand, but also taking art as an extra curricular activity at school. This then progressed to further education where Dex studied at an Art School in Denpasar to further develop his talent.

Like so many, making ends meet sometimes means giving up on dreams and for Dex, this was a reality. He gave up his passion to become a tour guide, only continuing with art in his spare time. However, his love for art couldn’t be suppressed and 14 years ago Dex took the bold leap back into where he’s most happy – creating beautiful art – and he’s never looked back.

IN THE STUDIO

He describes his style as 'contemporary'. Having explored more traditional Balinese art previously, he finds that contemporary expression gives much more freedom to both the creation and interpretation of his work.

Dex shared that his work is often based on the quiet inspiration he finds in nature and the vivid colours of life. His mind and heart absorb sights and feelings which then come to life in his creations.

WORK

His work has found its way to all corners of the globe from those passing by his workshop in central Bali. He's also shown his work at various exhibitions in Bali as well as worked with a French Gallery to exhibit in Lyon, Paris and Annecy.

"I constantly want to learn and grow … never stop … as this is how my work evolves and grows with me."
