ORIGINAL, AUTHENTIC ART
I paint, not for material reasons, but because it can bring so much joy to others. And when others are happy, well, this is my motivation to do what I do.

THE YELLOW BRICK ROAD GALLERY ARTIST

Up Close and Personal
We spoke with the artist about their art and their journey to creating beautiful work.

Jero Mangku Buda

Mangku Buda is self taught. Something he’s very proud of. Growing up he used to draw in his books but never thought this was something he could pursue professionally. Until, that is, his Uncle opened a small gallery in Klungkung in 2000.

This was his opportunity, his chance to pursue a dream he’d surpressed. And so he began to practice art professionally, pouring his creativity into canvas.

IN THE STUDIO

Whilst his inspiration comes from nature, over the years he's transitioned from fine art style to abstract interpretation.

"Whilst my love of nature remains constant, my soul was rebelling against realism as a style. I felt bound to the specific. Whereas with absract, I'm free to truly express myself."

For Mangku Buda. there's no finer moment for him than when he has that vision, that inspiration for a piece. "I get out my tools and will then paint, create, paint, create until the early hours. It's an absolute joy to get lost in my work."

WORK

Mangku Buda's finest moment in is career was bringing a customer to tears. Thankfully in a positive way. He recalls. "She saw my piece titled 'Love full of colours' and she just broke down. The painting touched her that much. This was by far the most rewarding and happy moment of my career so far."

"My hope for the future is that the strong tradition of art in Balinese culture, is preserved. And this starts at home. My 4 year old Daughter is already showing a lot of curosity in what I do, pestering me to join in and help out, which I love. She's adorable. Who knows, one day she too could be following her dream."
